This is coming from a NY Times website article about the entire story.  Visit the link to read the entire thing.  What I found most interesting was the insight of Dr. Frieden.

Anyway the story read,.
The first doses should reach doctors by Oct. 6, said the director, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, but almost all will be the FluMist nasal spray version, which has some limits on who may use it. By mid-October, 40 million doses of both the nasal spray and injectable versions should be out. The FluMist version is not recommended for infants under 2, adults over 49, pregnant women or anyone with a range of underlying health problems. But it is easy to use, and some pediatricians prefer it because many children fear needles.

With vaccines going from 5 manufacturers to 90,000 distribution points, Dr. Frieden said he expected shortages in some places and oversupply in others. Distribution will be different from that of seasonal flu vaccine, which doctors buy on their own. All the swine flu vaccine has been ordered and paid for by the federal government, which is also paying for its distribution and providing syringes and other items with it.

In some states, the swine flu vaccine will be injected at public sites like schools and city clinics, as polio vaccine was doled out in the 1950s. The best-prepared school systems have already asked parents to sign consent forms and have discussed plans at parent-teacher association meetings, Dr. Frieden said. Doctors, pharmacies and companies may also dispense it; the government is urging them to keep fees minimal.

Dr. Frieden said that the virus had not mutated in any threatening way and that the vaccine was still a good match for it.

You really don't need it because the standard symptoms are easy to spot and include:

* sudden fever, and
* sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

* headache,
* tiredness,
* chills,
* aching muscles,
* limb or joint pain,
* diarrhoea or stomach upset,
* sore throat,
* runny nose,
* sneezing, and
* loss of appetite.

* If you are then still concerned, stay at home and call your GP.

* If the GP confirms swine flu by telephone, they will give you a voucher reference number entitling you to antiviral medication.

* Give this number to a healthy friend or relative and ask them to pick up the antivirals for you from a designated local collection center.

In the United States an information fact sheet about swine flu, published by Mass.gov (pdf) informs that parents should call a doctor or seek medical care if your child has trouble breathing, has behavior changes like increased restlessness, anxiety and irritability, or isn’t drinking enough fluids. Be alert for skin rashes, dehydration or any other signs that your child is more uncomfortable than you would expect with the flu.

The biggest concern and highest potential for infection resides with people who work with or around pigs.  If you know someone that works with or around pigs, you want to take special care when interacting with that individual. If the person who works with pigs is you,. you might be infected already and you should use protective clothing and special breathing masks.

Some people who are infected with swine flu may only be "carriers"

This means that they have no symptoms and you have no way of telling they're of potential harm to you.

Here are responsible steps for everyone to take:

• Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue away after using it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You may also use alcohol-based hand cleaners/sanitizers .
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to avoid getting infected by germs.
• Avoid sharing drinks or other oral devices (ie mouth guards, instrument mouth pieces, etc)
  
• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you do get sick, consider staying home from work or school. (find a "sick buddy")

Anything over and above these steps may be considered paranoia.  It's always important to do what you can for your immune system as well.  Make sure your diet and nutritional needs are met, work out, stay hydrated, and get plenty of sleep.

Everyone knows that reduced human contact will help protect you from both spreading and getting infected with the 2009 Swine Flu virus.  You might also now about ways to boost your immune system so if you do get this virus you'll have a better chance of survival.

Over and above the obvious there are drugs, vaccines, and snake oil cures that are being sold everywhere.  Clorox, the bleach company, has jumped on the swine flu fear train with a swine flu resource area off of their website. (Click here to view)

I'm not saying that bleach won't kill the flu virus, I just think it's interesting that Clorox would take this marketing position.
